What Will I Be?  5-21-17

What will I be when I grow up?

1: There are tests, counselors, and classes that help me to decide. Am I supposed to be a carpenter, a lawyer, a mechanic, a salesperson?
2: Do I go to a university, community college, vocational training program? Maybe I should take a break from it all and sell t-shirts on a boardwalk for a summer or two?
3: There are so many choices, so much pressure.
4: What if I don’t have the grades or the athletic ability or the community service to do what I want to do? What if I am always behind everyone else? What if I don’t have anything to offer?
5: I don’t have what it takes.
6: I lack money, talent, opportunity.
7: Do I have a purpose, a mission?

What will I be when I grow up?

1: Does God have something to say to us? If God is real, then what he wants and what he desires is the most important thing in my life. What does he want me to do?
2: Then I heard the preacher read from the book of Exodus: “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”

3: I will be the one who listens to God’s Words. Like Peter I confess that Jesus has the very words of eternal life. No matter where I go to school, the most important words I will ever learn are the words of Jesus.

4: I will be a member of God’s covenant people. I believe that Jesus is present where his people are gathered. I might be part of many different groups, but God’s household will be my true home.

5: I will be God’s treasured possession. The world rates me by dollars, strength, physical appearance. Yet God loves me as his true child. I call out to him as Father. I will have many relationships in life, but none is more important than my relationship with him.

6: I will be a priest to God and for the world. I will pray for my neighbors like Abraham prayed for the people of Sodom. I will speak about God to my neighbors, living as an ambassador of Jesus. My title may be pilot or artist or plumber, but no matter what, I will be a priest.

7: I will walk in the ways of God’s holiness. God is holy. God is love. I will keep in step with the Spirit and strive to be like my Father in heaven. I will have many mentors and guides, but none is more important than my God.

What will we be when we grow up? We will be a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. We will proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
