Pastor’s Pen
Rev. David Horner

As April ends and May begins, I want us to look back at the past month.

It began in glorious fashion on Easter.  We had a great Worship Service to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection and the Lord’s supper.  Then we had our annual Easter Brunch which included the Lamb Cakes.  During the brunch we had an Easter Egg Hunt for the children, which was planned for and presided over by Associate Pastor Scott Cress and our older children.

Also on Easter and for several Sunday’s afterward, we had Tulips in the Sanctuary to celebrate the Season.  We thank the Worship and Music Committee for providing them and keeping them looking fit.

On April 13th Lafayette Urban Ministries had its annual Dinner and Follies.  Our David Stith performed a solo, and I heard it went well.

We celebrated Youth Sunday on April 22nd.  Associate Pastor Scott Cress led the Youth of our church who led us in worship.  Scott preached and led the Prayers while the Youth read scriptures and the children sang.

After Worship on the 22nd, we had a congregational meeting to dissolve our relationship with Scott, so he is free to pursue his calling to the Hillsdale Church in Michigan.

On the 29th, we celebrated Mission Sunday.  We had a video of Leonard Sidharta during Worship.  After   Worship, we had the Missions Fair in Fellowship Hall.  Joe Micon of LUM and Joe Radjakowski of Trinity Mission were also there.  There were pictures and descriptive materials from our other missions.

And now as we move into May there are several days that will deserve our attention.

May 10 will be ascension Day.  Being on the 40th day after Easter, it always comes on a Thursday, so it is not on our Worship Schedule, but it is an important day to remember.  It is written in the Scriptures that just after Jesus ascended, angels told the apostles that He would one day return to the earth.  The eventual bodily return of Jesus is one of the key doctrines of Christianity.  As we go through the joys and defeats of life, it is good to remember that Jesus is coming back to raise those who believe in Him and to bring them into his eternal    kingdom.

The ascension of Jesus also tells us where Jesus is now.  He is with The Father, ruling over the world and the cosmos.  He rules and observes from above the fray of the seasons and years of the world.

On Saturday, May 12th, we will have an Outdoor Work Day on our church property, to prepare the grounds and building for the Summer months.  You are invited to join us in the morning, because in reality, Work day only lasts until about Noon.
On May 13th we will honor our Moms, because it will be Mothers’ Day.

On May 18th and 19th the Presbytery of the Midwest will convene in Ann Arbor MI.
That meeting will be important to us, because it will be the meeting at which Scott Cress will be recognized as the new Pastor of the Hillsdale MI church.

On May 20th we will celebrate Pentecost.  As usual, we will have people read a verse of the bible in various languages, some of them reading in the language they first learned to speak in the nations of their origins.

Celebrating Pentecost at Faith Presbyterian Church is always special, because we have so many people who have come from other nations and cultures, and our gathering is actually a fulfillment of the miracle of the tongues.  On that first Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles in Jerusalem, everyone was able to hear the message about Jesus in their own language.  It was the first stage of the plan that Jesus had announced that His People would be gathered from all nations.  As is our custom The Lords Supper will be observed on Pentecost.

I suppose that some might find the juxtaposition of a Presbytery Meeting on the same weekend as Pentecost as interesting and perhaps even oxymoronic.  Presbyterians are usually seen as being ordered by logic and very systematic in their theology and practice of the faith.  But as all Christians, we are also supposed to be led by the Holy Spirit and show evidences that the Spirit is dwelling in us.  On a Presbytery/Pentecost weekend, I would like us all to think about how we are allowing the Spirit to lead us in our faith and in our lives, while still being Presbyterians and being systematic in our faith and beliefs.

May 27th will be Trinity Sunday, on which we specify another essential of the Christian Faith, that God has 3 persons, and is yet one God.

Some of you have been wondering how the search for the next Pastor is coming, and I can assure you that it is proceeding, and there may be an announcement soon.  God is leading in the process and we are following.

Have a great May.  (I keep thinking that the weather will have to get more seasonal, but I have been disappointed so much on the subject that I will not specify when.)

Your Pastor,

Dave Horner

* Our Mission of the Month for May is Trinity Life Ministry — Trinity helps men with addictions of various types by helping them become disciples of Christ.  The main location is in Crawfordsville but you probably know about their thrift store here in Lafayette.  The store here and the one in Crawfordsville help to fund the ministry and provide places for the guests to work in their spare time.

The success rate of this ministry is amazing compared to most rehabilitation programs. Without question, there is power in including Christ in the program and letting Him lead the way for these men.

The needs for the new group are as follows: Twin sheet sets, Pillows, Pillow cases, Towels, Wash cloths, Laundry Baskets, Laundry Soap and Blankets.

The ministry likes to give each guest a new set of linens, etc. to signify their “New Beginning” but gently used items in great condition are also appreciated.
