I am back from vacation and I am sad.  I guess I am sad that my vacation is over, but I am also and even more sad about some things that happened while I was away.  Our dear friend and sister Kathy Bowker died and her memorial service will be held here on Saturday, July 29th.  I was home in time to officiate at the service.  For a while, Kathy was the unofficial leader of our Emergency Aid Program after we moved its location to our building.  We have for the past several months been conducting it without her, but we do and we will miss her.  As our Thursday Evening Bible Study resumes this month, we will also miss her there.

While I was on vacation it was decided that Maxine Jones would no longer receive dialysis, meaning that she is expected to die within a few weeks.  As I write this she is still alive, but is fading day by day.
She told me to tell all of you how much you meant to her and how much this church had become an important part of her life.  She was especially close to Mary Lou Varys, who took her to knitting sessions and became a close friend.  I am grateful that Maxine had her friendship in her final years.

And, I came home from vacation just in time to bid farewell to Matt Grote, who was honored at a farewell   dessert on July 16th.  Later that week, he came to the church to clean up some music items when I happened to be in my office.  We took that opportunity to say our goodbyes.  I know you join me in wishing him much   success as he prepares for and then takes his vows to serve our Lord.  His departure leaves us looking for a Choir Director, so if you know of anyone who might so serve us, please let me or Carol Goodrich or Jan Hem know.  AND this would also be a good time for the choir to receive new members as they begin a new season.  If you are interested, please come to a rehearsal on Wednesdays, after the choir begins singing in Worship.

My slightly early return from vacation also allowed me to say goodbye to Marilyn Sameh, our departing     organist.  I know that along with all of you, I bade her farewell officially a few months back, but we had not said our private and personal goodbyes.  Marilyn is a talented organist, and a one-of-a-kind person, and I am honored to be her friend.  I shall miss her.

However, I am glad to say that our church organ and the playing thereof is in excellent hands as our member Mark Johnson has now become our Organist.  Every time I think I have a handle on Mark’s style of playing, he demonstrates something new.  I am excited to be working with him on Sunday mornings.  He is an amazing fellow in more ways than musical and we are fortunate to have him working in our midst.

All of which leads me to comment on where we are in God’s plan for us.  We have changed organists, we are looking for a choir director, and I am serving as your pastor for just one more year.  We are in some ways in a time of transition.  That is OK, the only one who lives and serves forever is almighty God.  The rest of us all have our times and seasons.  The real art of living and of serving the Lord is in building on those times and seasons so that we together grow stronger and more able to serve.  God is taking us into the future, and preparing us for it as a congregation.  Let us be grateful for what He is doing in our midst.  And let us look forward to what He will do with us and for us during this next year and in the years to come.
A small part of preparing ourselves for the future will take place on August 6th after Worship.  On that day, we will have a special or “Called” meeting of the congregation.  The Session has called this meeting and the purpose of it is for the congregation to elect a Pastoral Search Committee.  The Session and the Deacons have selected seven people to serve on this committee and they will be nominated to the congregation by the Session.  The congregation will of course have the final decision as to who will be on the committee and after the nominations are made, the meeting or “floor” will be open for other nominations.

It is the intent of the Session that this Search Committee shall determine the scope of their search and present a candidate to the congregation for election as the next pastor when their work is finished.  The committee may also consult the congregation and or members thereof as they do their work.

I think it is fitting that we are beginning this process on a day that will be special for other reasons.
On that day, we will remember who we are and Whose we are by participating in the Lord’s Supper.
And we will also look to the future by welcoming a new person into our midst.  On that day, Benjamin Ward will receive the sacrament of Baptism.  I will be officiating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and Scott will officiate the Sacrament of Baptism.  I think it will be a day to remember.

As our community begins the Fall Semester, we will also begin our Bible Studies and Sunday School.
Our regular Sunday School will begin on August 20th.  The Thursday Evening Bible Study will begin on August 24th (at the Horner’s at 7:00), and the Sunday evening Bible Study will begin on August 27th (in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30).

The Thursday Evening Bible Study will continue its study of the Epistles of Peter, while the Sunday Evening group will resume its study of Revelation.

We hope you can join us this fall for our Sunday School and Bible Studies.

And, I also look forward to seeing you at Worship.

Clerks Corner

  • This report deals with recent actions of the Session and with follow-up procedures: in the absence of Pastor Horner at its regular July 10, 2017 meeting, the Session was moderated by Elder Don Gentry.  The following actions were taken:
  • The monthly financial report submitted by Treasurer Carol Gentry was accepted. The financial operations are mostly right on target. Organ maintenance expenditures are higher than projected because of maintenance problems.
  • It was noted that Sunday, July 16, 2017 will be the last day of Matthew Grote’s role as choir director at Faith Church. It was agreed to organize a special reception in his honor at the conclusion of the Sunday service on that date.
  • Elder Gentry reviewed the primary objective of the meeting: to initiate the process of finding a successor to Pastor Horner, who had announced his intention to retire at the end of June 2018. The EPC allows the search for a successor to commence before the pulpit is vacated. A search committee is to be formed, consisting of two members from the session, one individual from the board of deacons, and no fewer than four persons from the congregation. The Session may nominate these individuals but must allow for further nominations from the floor when the congregation is called to officially approve the constitution of the ministerial search committee. The successor to Pastor Horner need not be a member of, but must first be ordained into, the EPC. The Presbytery is to be informed of all official actions. If the current  Associate Pastor is to receive a call the action must first be approved by ¾ of the Session and by ¾ of the Congregation.
  • By consent Elder Gentry was nominated as chair of the search committee, with Elder Goodrich as the second member; both individuals agreed to serve in this capacity.
  • At its July 17, 2017 meeting The Board of Deacons nominated Deborah Fleetham as its representative to the ministerial search committee; she agreed to serve in that capacity.
  • At its July 17, 2017 meeting the Session nominated four individuals as representatives of the Congregation to the ministerial search committee: Deborah Johnson, Jerry Matthews, Steven Varys, and Jennifer White, all of whom agreed to serve in this capacity.
  • The names of all the above individuals will be submitted for approval at the Congregational Meeting of August 6, 2017, with additional nominations being recognized from the floor.

The next meeting of the Session is tentatively set for August 14, 2017.

* The Session has called a special meeting of the congregation Sunday, August 6th immediately after worship service for the purpose of selecting a Pastor Search Committee. The following members will be placed into nomination by the Session: Don Gentry, Session Member and Chair; Carol Goodrich, Session Member; Debbie Fleetham, Deacons; and four at large members from the Congregation — Deb Johnson; Jerry Mathews, Steve Varys and Jennifer White. The floor will be opened for other nominations. 


* L2 Single Ladies Group is planning to have lunch at the Village Pub at Westminster Village Monday, August 7th at 11:30 a.m. All single women are invited to join our group. Questions? Contact Jean McCoy.


* Answered Prayers!  Franks Daughter, Kristina is visiting the USA from Austria August 2nd until August 25th!  All are invited to join our family for her “Sweet 16” birthday party on Saturday, August 12th from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. It will be an open house, and we would love to share this special moment with you.  Please feel free to contact Frank or April if you have any questions. 


* Get ready for Fall Sunday School — Sunday School is Starting on August 20th. We are excited  to have great teachers and a curriculum  designed by Faith Alive  Dwell Curriculum.

This curriculum engages children from Pre-school to High School. Looking forward to seeing the kids and Adults in Sunday School on August 20th.

* Men’s breakfast Fridays, 7:30 a.m. at Christos New City Grill West Side. All men are invited to join us for food, fun, and fellowship. 


* Library notes: It's mid-summer and maybe your kids are starting to get bored?!  Direct them to the Children's Church Library. There are all sorts of good books to read.

Changes to note:

At this time, we don't have many older elementary age children.  The books for this age group are going to be moved to the upstairs library on the bottom shelves below the return basket.  They can still be checked out there.  This will free up space for books that appeal to our younger children.  If anyone has books they would like to donate to this age group, please give them to Anna or leave them in the return basket in the upstairs library.


* Sunday Evening Bible Study starts August, 27th at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Horner will resume the study on the Book of Revelation. Come join us for prayer, refreshments, engaging conversation, and meaningful fellowship. We close promptly at 8:00 p.m. See you there! 


* Faith Presbyterian “Mission of the Month” — It appears that our Mission of the Month program has lost momentum.  Donations for June hit an all-time low, and July doesn’t appear to be going much better.  There are many possible factors (not being in church as much during the summer, not enough cheerleading from me because I have been gone) but whatever the reason is, we seem to have lost our momentum.  For this reason, we will not have a Mission of the Month for August.  We will take this break (approved by the Board of Deacons) and start up again in September with renewed vigor (and    cheerleading) and recapture the momentum we had last spring and fall.  Thanks to all of you who have been so incredibly generous.  We will be calling on you to resume your generous giving when we begin fresh in September.

* Habitat Apostle Build Starting Soon! — This fall Faith will be participating in the Apostle Build.  The partner family for this house on Commanche Trail is Katie Gunion and her daughter Adalynn.  Construction will begin Wednesday, September 6.  As of July 23 we have raised $43,188.64 of the necessary $55,000.  That means we have $11,811.36 to go.

We also have opportunities for anyone wishing to help with construction.  Most weekends we'll be working Friday and Saturday.  We're also looking for a few volunteers to provide lunch for the construction crew on a couple of the workdays.  Please contact Daniel Trinkle to sign up for one of these volunteer opportunities.
And last, but not least, we will be having a roof raising ceremony on Saturday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m.
