March 2017 Newsletter

Mar 1, 2017

Pastor’s Pen
Rev. David Horner

This year March begins on Ash Wednesday, which for many Presbyterians does not really mean much except that it is the beginning of Lent, which again, for many of us does not mean too much.  But it does mark the approach, in a little more than six weeks, of Good Friday and Easter.  It is a time to think about the suffering our Lord endured for the sake of those he loved, including us.  Some of us like to engage in some special disciplines during Lent.  Might I make a few suggestions?

First of all, for the past 8 years it has been my custom to suggest that during Lent we all read through a particular Gospel, reading about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.  This year I am suggesting that we read together the gospel according to Luke.  Luke has 24 chapters, so if we read 4 chapters a week, we will finish before Good Friday.

We will not be reading from Luke in our Worship Services as I have decided to continue our progress through I Samuel and Matthew.  The Matthew passages are appropriate for this season because we are now in the part of Matthew that describes Jesus’ teachings and actions during the week between Palm Sunday and Good Friday.

For those of you who like to have your thoughts and behaviors guided by some discipline during Lent, I am suggesting that we focus on Jesus’ words from the cross as they are recorded in Luke 23:34; “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

The people who follow Jesus profess to be forgiven.  A few of us are still struggling with forgiving ourselves for something that we participated in in our past.  We need to acknowledge that Jesus died to gain forgiveness from the Father for that thing and for many others and put it behind us and move on.

Many of us might be daily irritated by the thoughtless or deliberate acts of others as we go about our lives.  Approaching the people of our world with the spirit of forgiveness might go a long way in making our part of the world a more pleasant place for ourselves and others.  Remember, we follow the One who even as He suffered great pain on the cross asked for forgiveness for those who were torturing and killing Him.

And, as I did last year, I welcome those of you who want to have a special way to start the season of Lent to join us in our Morning Prayers Service on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 7:00 AM.

In my newsletter article last month I acknowledged the death of our Ruling Elder Tom Housley and mentioned that we had a plan to secure a person to serve the last two years of his term.  That plan has born fruit and we will be electing and installing that person this month.  The Nominating Committee while it was working in the Fall was instructed by the pastor to gather a few extra names, so that if Tom died, we would have people they could contact to complete his term.  The Chairperson of the committee did pursue those on the list after Tom died and they have a person to nominate.
So, the pastor and Session have called a congregational meeting that will occur immediately after worship on March 5th to elect a Ruling Elder to serve for two years on the Session.  The Nominating Committee will   nominate Peggy Housley to that position.  The meeting will be open to other nominations from the floor, then we will proceed to elect a person to serve as a Ruling Elder on the Session for 2017 and 2018.

On the following Sunday, March 12th, we will install that person to office and they can then join the Session at its meeting on the following evening, March 13th.

This might be a good time to remind you that our part of Indiana will begin Daylight Savings time on March 12th.  Remember to turn the clocks forward one hour and get to bed early enough to be ready to Worship at 9:30 DST that day.

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in our many activities in February.

Members of our Boy Scout Troop and their families were with us during worship on February 5th.  Then the Ladies of our church served us a Soup luncheon and Ice Cream Sundaes in honor of Super Bowl Sunday.  It was a great lunch which set the stage for a most memorable and record shattering football game that evening.

On that same day, the ladies also packaged Valentine’s cookies for our University and Graduate Students.  Fortunately they had some cookies left over which we enjoyed for a few weeks at Coffee Hour.

On February 19th the Youth Fellowship prepared a Fellowship Dinner for us which consisted of French Toast and Bacon, with a smattering of eggs.  We do appreciate their labors and it was nice for the rest of us to spend some time together.

As March approaches, I will continue to teach two Bible Study classes each week; The Thursday Evening    Bible Study (which meets at 7:00 – 8:30 PM at the Horner’s) is continuing studies in the Epistle of James, while the Sunday Evening Bible Study (which meets at 6:30 – 8:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of the church) is continuing studies in the Book of Revelation or The Apocalypse.

AND, as we proceed toward April, I have a few dates that you may want to notice.

On April 9th we will celebrate Palm Sunday during Worship.

On April 13th we will celebrate Maundy or Holy Thursday with a Worship Service with the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 PM.

On April 14th, we will celebrate Good Friday with two identical brief services at Noon and 7:00 PM.

On April 16th we will celebrate Easter at 9:30 with the Lord’s Supper and a brunch and Easter egg hunt after Worship.

AND on April 30th the Deacons will sponsor a Mission Fair for us following Worship.

AND I will be on Spring Break on either March 26th or April 2nd and Scott will lead Worship while I am away.

Remember to think about and demonstrate the forgiveness of our Lord this month.

Your Pastor,

Dave Horner
