Faith Presbyterian Church         9:30 a.m., May 27, 2018
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all
may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself
and for Faith Church.

Psalter:     Psalm 66:1-7 &16-20      NRSV (read responsively)   Nancy Dunn
1Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;
2sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise.
3Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great    power, your enemies cringe before you.
4All the earth worships you; they sing praises to you, sing praises to your name.”
5Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.
6He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There we rejoiced in him,
7who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations— let the rebellious not exalt themselves.

16Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for me.
17I cried aloud to him, and he was extolled with my tongue.
18If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
19But truly God has listened; he has given heed to the words of my prayer.
20Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

Prayer for Illumination                       Nancy Dunn

First Lesson:     Genesis 1:26-31     NRSV                    Nancy Dunn
26Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”27So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
29God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Lector:     “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation:     “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem     Make My Life an Alleluia by Ruth Elaine Schram

Make my life an alleluia,
A song of praise to you each day.
To proclaim Your grace and glory,
Fill my heart with your praise, I pray.
When I stand at the mountain top,
Or the valley of despair,
This will by my cry, my song, my prayer:
Lord, make my life an alleluia.

Make my life an alleluia,
A gift of love to You, my King.
I will join with all creation
In the song that the heavens sing!
The earth will turn and the planets spin,
As the seasons ebb and flow,
Still your grace surrounds me as I go.
Lord, make my life an alleluia.

Make my life an alleluia,
This offering of myself I give to You.
I will share Your grace and mercy
For as long as I shall live.
When I come to my journey's end,
May those left behind be reminded,
This has been my cry, my song, my prayer:
Lord, make my life an alleluia!

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 284     Father, I Adore You
                              (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Second Lesson:     Ephesians 3:1-13     NRSV
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles— 2for surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given me for you, 3and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, 4a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. 5In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. 8Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, 9and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has       carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. 13I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable,
and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
-William Temple

To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and
long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look
for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to
all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever
will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her
welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.

Thank you for considering serving in this way!

* Mission of the Month for May is Trinity Life Ministry — Trinity helps men with addictions of various types by helping them become disciples of Christ.  The main location is in Crawfordsville but you probably know about their thrift store here in Lafayette.  The store here and the one in Crawfordsville help to fund the ministry and provide places for the guests to work in their spare time.

The success rate of this ministry is amazing compared to most rehabilitation programs. Without question, there is power in including Christ in the program and letting Him lead the way for these men.

The needs for the new group are as follows: Twin sheet sets, Pillows, Pillow cases, Towels, Wash cloths, Laundry Baskets, Laundry Soap and Blankets.

The ministry likes to give each guest a new set of linens, etc. to signify their “New Beginning” but gently used items in great condition are also appreciated.
