The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church         9:30 a.m., February 25, 2018
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all
may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself
and for Faith Church.

Hymn     # 621     The God of Abraham Praise
                                     (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter:     Psalm 27     NRSV (read responsively)    Rob Wagner
1The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh— my adversaries and foes— they shall stumble and fall.
3Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.
4One thing I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
5For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.
6Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.
7Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!
8“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, LORD, do I seek.
9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!
10If my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up.
11Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.
12Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.
13I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the    living.
14Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Prayer for Illumination                Rob Wagner

First Lesson:     Isaiah 60:1-7     NRSV           Rob Wagner
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. 2For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. 3Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. 4Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. 5Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. 7All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you; they shall be acceptable on my altar, and I will glorify my glorious house.

Lector:     “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation:     “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem     Agnus Dei, arr. Joel Raney

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 457     He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands                                                            (Gray Psalter Hymnal) (all 6 verses no chorus)

Second Lesson:     John 3:16-21     NRSV
16“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.17“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”

Sermon     “A Great Sermon, in Black or Red”      Pastor David Horner

Worship
…is the quickening
of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable,
and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.
-William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and
long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look
for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to
all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever
will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her
welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
