The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church         9:30 a.m., February 4, 2018
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all
may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself
and for Faith Church.

Prelude

Welcome

Hymn     # 461     Beautiful Savior
                           (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal

Prayer for Illumination                    Ron Smith

First Lesson:     II Samuel 5:17-25     NRSV           Ron Smith
17When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim. 19David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” The Lord said to David, “Go up; for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20So David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has burst forth against my enemies before me, like a bursting flood.” Therefore that place is called Baal-perazim. 21The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away. 22Once again the Philistines came up, and were spread out in the valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come upon them opposite the balsam trees. 24When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then be on the alert; for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25David did just as the Lord had commanded him; and he struck down the Philistines from Geba all the way to Gezer.

Lector:     “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation:     “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem     The Light of Glory     Joseph M. Martin & David Angerman

You are the light of glory, You are the wondrous story,
You are the author of our faith.
You are the life eternal, You are the word supernal,
You are the Lamb, the giver of grace.

You are the mighty warrior, You are the great Redeemer,
You are the chief and cornerstone.
You are the sure foundation, You are the hope of nations,
You are our God, and God alone.

You are the light of glory, You are the wondrous story,
You are the maker of all things.
You are the great creator, You are the Lord and Savior,
You are the One, the King of Kings!

You are patient and kind,  You are love divine,
A treasure of priceless worth,
Your kingdom endures forever, Your mercy faileth never.
You are the joy of salvation, the light of the world!

You are the Lord! You are the King!
You are the Light of Glory!

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 377     Were You There
                           (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Second Lesson:     Ephesians 1:15-23     NRSV
15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church,23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Sermon     “Who is at the Meal?”      Pastor David Horner

Hymn     # 304     Let Us Break Bread Together
                                      (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

The Lord’s Supper
        Invitation

Words of Institution:     I Corinthians 11:23-26     In Unison
23For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
           The inside cups are white grape juice;
                        the outer cups contain wine.

Prayer of Consecration
Almighty Lord: we are thankful for all the benefits given us in this bread and wine, this body and blood.  As the grain was harvested and the grapes gathered for this food, so may your church in every place be gathered into your household. And as the grain was ground and the grapes crushed, so may our lives be spent in your service, until you return in triumph to gather to yourself the harvest and call us to the marriage feast of the lamb.  Amen.

Hymn     # 373     Lift High the Cross (vs. 1,6 & 7)

Worship
…is the quickening
of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable,
and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.
-William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and
long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look
for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to
all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever
will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her
welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.

Our little Jessie is getting married on February 10th to Garret Prestwood, another of God’s servants. Garret served as a church planter in Croatia for 11 years. To learn more about both Garret and Jessie, visit their wedding website: www.weddingwire.com/garretandjessie.
