The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church         9:30 a.m., January 28, 2018
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all
may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself
and for Faith Church.

Hymn Sing     Supplemental Hymnal
                          # 86  Come, Let Us Worship and Bow Down
                          #   1  The Church’s One Foundation
                          # 58  Before the Throne of God Above
                          # 17  I Cannot Tell Why He

Hymn     # 244     God Himself Is with Us
                                 (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter:     Psalm 9:1-12     NRSV (read responsively)  Dorothy Bethel
1I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3When my enemies turned back, they stumbled and perished before you.
4For you have maintained my just cause; you have sat on the throne giving righteous judgment.
5You have rebuked the nations, you have destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6The enemies have vanished in everlasting ruins; their cities you have rooted out; the very memory of them has perished.
7But the LORD sits enthroned forever, he has established his throne for judgment.
8He judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with equity.
9The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
10And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion. Declare his deeds among the peoples.
12For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

Prayer for Illumination                       Dorothy Bethel

First Lesson:     Numbers 23:18-24     NRSV        Dorothy Bethel
18Then Balaam uttered his oracle, saying: “Rise, Balak, and hear; listen to me, O son of Zippor: 19God is not a human being, that he should lie, or a mortal, that he should change his mind. Has he promised, and will he not do it? Has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? 20See, I received a command to bless; he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it. 21He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob; nor has he seen trouble in Israel. The Lord their God is with them, acclaimed as a king among them. 22God, who brings them out of Egypt, is like the horns of a wild ox for them. 23Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, no divination against Israel; now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘See what God has done!’ 24Look, a people rising up like a lioness, and rousing itself like a lion! It does not lie down until it has eaten the prey and drunk the blood of the slain.”

Lector:     “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation:     “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem     Forever I Will Praise You     Eileen Berry & Molly Ijames

To God, Who makes His goodness known to all and freely puts His      kindness on display;
To God, Who reads the longings of my heart and hovers close beside me when I pray.
To God, Who lifts me up each time I fall and sees me when my heart is bowed with pain;
To God, Who fills my hungry heart with love and raises up my eyes to hope again.

Forever I will praise You, O my King! Forever and forever I will sing!
Whenever I reflect on all You do, my grateful heart lifts up a song to You.

To God, Who reigns in glorious majesty, Whose kingdom stands through everlasting days,
Whose greatness is beyond my highest thought, To God alone I will lift up my praise!

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 10     The King of Love
                        (Supplemental Hymnal)

Second Lesson:     Ephesians 1:1-14     NRSV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Sermon     “What Hath God Wrought!”    Pastor David Horner

…is the quickening
of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable,
and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.
-William Temple

To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and
long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look
for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to
all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever
will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her
welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.

Mission of the Month — Our Mission of the Month for January will be Trinity Life Ministry. Trinity helps men with addictions of various types by helping them become disciples of Christ. The main location is in Crawfordsville but you probably know about their thrift store here in Lafayette.  The store here and the one in Crawfordsville help to fund the ministry and provide places for the guests to work in their spare time.

The success rate of this ministry is amazing compared to most rehabilitation programs. Without question, there is power in including Christ in the program and letting Him lead the way for these men.

The needs for the new group are as follows: Twin sheet sets, Pillows, Pillow cases, Towels, Wash cloths, Laundry Baskets, Laundry Soap and Blankets.

The ministry likes to give each guest a new set of linens, etc. to signify their “New Beginning” but gently used items in great condition are also appreciated.

* Jessica Stewart, a “daughter” of Faith Presbyterian Church, is getting married! Many of you remember little Jessie Stewart, one of three Stewart girls to grow up in Faith Church. We supported her many mission trips over the years, and Jessie now practices medicine in Durham, NC.

Our little Jessie is getting married on February 10th to Garret Prestwood, another of God’s servants. Garret served as a church planter in Croatia for 11 years. To learn more about both Garret and Jessie, visit their wedding website: www.weddingwire.com/garretandjessie. It contains suggestions for donations you can make to their favorite missions instead of purchasing a gift. We wish God’s blessings on their union.
